Personal Narrative :: essays research papers

A calm crisp breeze circled my body as I sat emerged in my thoughts, hopes, and memories. The rough bark on which I sat reminded me of the rough road many people have traveled, only to end with something no one in human form can contemplate. â€Å"How can the complex working of the universe and the world around me end in such a simple catastrophe?† I wondered. I sat back and let the sun bathe me in its bright, reminiscent light. The atmosphere around me was quiet, but just a few feet away people were mourning a great life. It was a life that some say was â€Å"lived to the longest and the fullest.† I ,on the other hand, held a solid disagreement. The â€Å"longest† couldn’t yet be over, could it? Seventy-five just seemed too short when I had only shared thirteen years with this fabulously, wonderful woman. I stood up, as the loud vibrations of the church bells seem to touch my heart. I crossed the long, seemingly endless stream of soft healthy green grass to the black box, which lay just as I had left it in its own solitude. Inside of it lay the violin in which I had devoted a lot of my middle school life to. I had spent many hours practicing on this wooden contraption. Now all of my hard work, all of my hours practicing, would go into making this one piece sound amazing, spectacular, and memorable. This wasn’t something I was doing for myself. This was something I was doing for my family, friends, and most importantly the sweet, cherished soul of my dearly departed grandmother. I wanted there to be one last remarkable token of my love for someone who had made such a large impact on my life. I knew that my grandmother had absolutely loved the fact that I play a violin. She had always said that I held so much talent. â€Å"This,† I thought, â€Å"will be something that she truly would have wanted.† I opened the box and looked at the soft velvet casing. The freshly polished wood of my instrument glittered golden brown in the evening sun. I reached for it and picked it up. The usually very light instrument seemed to weigh more than I could ever remember. I walked in a straight line up the side of the church building. I passed the graves of many of the dead as I made my way to the door.

Welty’s A Worn Path: The Strength of Love :: A Worn Path essays

Strength of Love in A Worn Path   In the story A Worn Path, Eudora Welty shows an old woman living in a time period where racial prejudice is rampant and out of control.   Phoenix Jackson is a grandmother whose only motivation for living is to nurture her grandson back to health.   The strength of love may make people do or say unusual and implausible things.   The central idea of this story is that love can empower someone to over come many life-threatening obstacles.   The idea is shown when an old woman conquers all odds against her to show her everlasting love for her grandson.   Throughout the story Phoenix Jackson has to overcome many types of obstacles that hinder her in her devotion to help her grandson.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One of the main hindrances that stand in her way is the physical aspect of her age as well as the journey.   Phoenix Jackson is very weak and feeble because of her old age so that makes her long journey very strenuous.   Another physical obstacle is that she has to weave and duck under a barbwire fence.   Her feeble body cannot handle such tasks at her age.   The third hindrance she must defeat is that she must cross over a log that lay across a creek.   This requires concentration, skill, and patients.   Even people whom are twice as young as Phoenix have trouble doing such things.   Not many other emotional force other then love is strong enough to give power to an old woman who is living only for one reason.   She realizes that if she were to die then the fate of her grandson would be damned.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There are also mental obstacles that obstruct Phoenix’s journey.   She has to triumph over her weariness because of her old age and her mental fatigue.   As she is walking her mind plays tricks on her, such as the time when she is in the field and mistakes the scarecrow for a dark mysterious figure that she is frightened of.   Another time is when she talks to herself and the animals in the woods.   She tells them not to get in her way because she has a long trip ahead of her.   The love that one person gives to another is never truly appreciated until the recipient realizes what that person has actually done.   The grandson may be too ill or even too young to realize what his grandmother is doing for his safety.

Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song)

Jazz is a style of music that integrates with strong, convoluted rythms. Jazz is traces its origins from the basic principles of Blues music. It is solely based on a pattern of succession of two or more distinct sounds, wherein the a sound of a particular instrument is complemented by the other in perfect harmony. Jazz also highly involves emotion in playing. This may vary according to the mood, experience, and interactions with other people. In this sense jazz's key components may be augmented when played. The piece, Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song) is a Jazz piece performed by the band Incubus. The musical piece, though performed by contemporary musicians, arranged the piece with respect to the conventional elements of Jazz. The song is a harmony of string instruments accompanied by drums and percussion plus a saxophone to add more emotion. The piece, according to Sara Shaw insinuates a lively feel similar to the implications of Disco Music during the 1970sSummer Romance (Ant i-Gravity Love Song) is a song that brings out a â€Å"Jazzy† feel. Its tempo is is not as fast to cause an adrenalin rush, however, the beat of the drums and the percussion compliments are enthusiastic to provoke a listener to dance into the song. The song Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song) applies the musical concept of an ensemble, particularly of a quintet. The string instruments, percussions and brass instruments are accompanied by vocals that complete the musical piece. However, as far as texture is concerned an additional string instrument such as a jazz guitar could provide more rhythm to add more ebullience to the piece. The tempo is just moderate enough for the piece and the saxophone solo is the icing to the cake. The lack of rhythm did not hinder the piece to express its feel nor the idea that it suggests. Major Competitors for Toyota Company

Major Competitors for TOYOTA Company Toyota Motor, among the world's largest automotive manufacturers by auto sales, designs and manufactures a diverse product line-up that  ranges from  subcompacts to luxury and sports vehicles to SUVs, trucks, minivans, and buses. Its vehicles are produced  either  with combustion or hybrid engines,  as with  the  Prius. Toyota's subsidiaries also manufacture vehicles: Daihatsu Motor  produces mini-vehicles, while  Hino Motors  produces  trucks and buses. Additionally, Toyota makes automotive parts for its own use and for  sale to  others.Popular models include the Camry, Corolla, Land Cruiser, and luxury Lexus line, as well as the Tundra truck. Ford Motor Company is the second-largest automobile company in the world. Ford's main focus is automobiles; however, they also operate in Ford Credit and Hertz Corporation. Ford also has controlling interest in Mazda Motor Corporation. Ford was established June, 1903; in an old wag on factory in Detroit Michigan. In 1903, Ford began production on a two-cylinder, 8 horsepower called the Model A. They produced a total of 1,708 of these cars in their first year of operation.Toyota Motor Corporation was Japan's largest car company. Toyota ranked the world’s third largest by the year 2000. The company could produce near five million car units annually in the 1990s and controlled approximately 10 percent of the global market. Toyota was founded by a man named Kiichiro Toyoda in 1933. He did not produce his first car until 1935. By this time General Motors and Ford were already operating in Japan. Both companies are manufactures of cars which are sold in the United States. One is made in Japan and the other in the United States. They are both a financially well because of the popularity of their cars. The accounting criteria's that they both face are different because of the foreign rules and regulations. Both companies are faced with their own set of rules tha t have to be followed, but Toyota is faced with more issues since they sell their cars in the United States. Toyota's  recent string of troubles – from multiple  recalls  over unintended acceleration to a new report this morning that their popular  Prius hybrid  could have problems with its  braking system  Ã¢â‚¬â€ created a series of questions in the minds of their owners.Where the public might have previously thought that recall problems were the bastion of the domestics and  safety issues were permanently in our rear view mirrors after decades of innovation and pressure from the U. S. Department of Transportation, now it appears that there's a new world order: could Toyota be, after all, mortal? Where some previously believed the company could do no wrong, there does now exist a void. A few competitors have a crystal clear idea of how to fill that void.In the wake of the recent unintended acceleration recall, all manner of competitors have created specific sales campaigns to target Toyota owners. General Motors,  Ford,  Chrysler  and  Hyundai  have all stepped up to offer official  rebates  to current Toyota owners, while other brands such as  Mazda  are specifically targeting Toyota owners through some savvy keyword advertising on the web. All in all it spells out one message: Toyota owners might – for the first time in a long time – consider another brand and if they do, some manufacturers want it to be their brand and theirs alone.

A Clockwork orange essays research papers

At the start of A Clockwork Orange, you are introduced to Alex and his droogs. They are at a milkbar drinking milk-plus. Milk, plus types of drugs that enhance Alex and his droogs ultraviolence, which is the main backdrop to the story that leads to other psychological events. Drug addiction is a complex disorder that is compulsive and often uncontrollable. This is a chronic relapsing disorder, and treatment for drug addiction is about as effective as treatments for chronic medical conditions.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Next Alex goes to a home in the country for a surprise visit of the ultra-violent kind. To persuade the wife of the house to let him in, Alex uses an intrinsic approach, pretending to be a helpless fellow in need of a telephone. This is a behavior used to fulfill an urge of Alex's, which is ultra-violence.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Later on back at the milk bar, or Korova, Alex smacks his brother for behaving inapropriately, saying, "...For being a bastard with no manners. Without a dook of an idea about how to comport yourself public-wise, O my brother." So at this point Alex is using positive punishment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Alex heads to his house where he stays with his Dad and Mum. His mother, an older woman, has purple hair. This could be from the natural aging process of the eye, making his Mum think her hair is possibly silver or blond, when instead is a deep purple. But, then again, this movie might as well be using an artistic approach, and the hair color could reflect on the fashion of the near future.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Alex goes in for treatment to cure his ultra-violence. The treatment is a conditioning method where he is to watch terribly movies with his eyes held open. After many, many views Alex gets sick at the slightest hint of any voilence or sex.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Alex is put on stage where he is to be used in a demonstration. A man walks out, toward Alex. He begins to yell at Alex, then gets violent.

Two Novel Loci for Genetic Resistance in Malaria Essay

Two Novel Loci for Genetic Resistance in Malaria - Essay Example Severe forms of malaria are caused by P. falciparum, a prevalent parasite in Sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria has been mentioned in literature as a potent form of natural selection among human populations (Kwiatkowski, 2005). This has been evident in malaria prone regions where, for instance, sickle cell variants in human populations have been shown to be refractive against malaria infection. Other genes which are known to confer genetic resistance against malaria include Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) deficiency and ?-thalassemias variants. In Africa and Asia, genetic resistance against most prevalent malaria form, severe falciparum malaria is conferred by variants of hemoglobin and G6PDH deficiency. The structure adopted by the sickle cell variant of hemoglobin may not offer optimum environment for the malaria parasites to flourish as compared to the normal hemoglobin. Genetic Resistance in Malaria Genes involved in malaria resistance include the sickle cell genes for hemoglo bin where the heterozygote form confers malarial resistance (Kwiatkowski, 2005). In addition, Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) deficient individuals are also refractory to malaria infections. This confirms that malaria resistance among humans has a genetic element which according to Hedrick (2011) is evolutionarily significant. It is important to note that these malaria resistance genes such as the ABO, HLA and G6PDH are highly variant. Human host response to malarial parasite is different especially for P. falciparum. Some individuals may succumb to infection whereas others may survive. This varied refractoriness may be attributed to genetic factors which account for around 25% of the risk of severe malaria (Mackinnon et al., 2005). Thus, among the population where malaria cases are prevalent, malaria has exerted significant pressure on the human genome to select mutations that are known to confer genetic resistance (Tishkoff and Williams, 2002). Besides sickle cell and Gl ucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) deficiency, other mutations such as Duffy mutations and ?- thalassemias also confer genetic resistance to malaria. In endemic areas especially Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum has imposed strong selective pressure amongst the population (Snow et al., 2005). Factors mentioned in literature linked to this susceptibility environmental, host genetics and parasite virulence (Mackinnon et al., 2005). These factors may interplay to determine the course of the disease. The advent of the completed human genome has heralded a new dawn in the understanding of major diseases and the potential susceptibility to these diseases as a result of one’s genetic make-up. Apart from the known genetic resistance variants known to protect against malaria, G6PDH and sickle cell trait, molecular biology technologies which have engaged data from the complete human genome have contributed to the progressive discovery of genes and/or gene loci that influence the susceptibility to disease both directly or indirectly. Genes that confer resistance to malaria, for instance, may alter the normal interaction between the parasite and host or in other cases may modulate the development of immune response towards the pathogen. These polymorphisms may exist in the population as processes of natural selection and co-adaptation take place. Several malaria parasites infections

Yvain Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Yvain - Essay Example Yvain or the Knight with the Lion tells of Yvain, a knight in King Arthur’s court, whose adventures are initially kicked off by his desire to prove his bravery in the eyes of his fellow knights. Chivalry and courtly love are the two elements underpinning and moving the story, which is set in the medieval period of the famed fictional Arthurian era. Moreover, Chretien de Troyes’ tale highlights the importance of good reputation in the medieval period among knights and how reputation is equated to acts of chivalry and bravery especially for the benefit of the helpless like women. In Yvain or the Knight with the Lion, the reader is apprised of how a knight’s reputation is made, kept and lost. Apparently, reputation for chivalry, honor and bravery is the all-most important consideration by which each knight lives by. The story’s main character Yvain is a proud man who is impelled to rush and defend his honor from a disparaging remark, obviously made in jest and presumably after several bottles of wine, insinuating inability to make good his words. The challenge, to which he rises started when his cousin Calogrenant told a group of knights that he had been defeated by a knight after he had stirred a storm-brewing magical basin at the edge of a forest. This made Yvain censure his cousin for keeping this from him for so long and promptly vowed to avenge his shame by killing the knight himself. Kay, another knight, mocks Yvain’s pronouncement insinuating that he is merely heady with wine. Stung by the remark, Yvain secretly left for the place mentioned by Calogrenant even when King Arthur himself has scheduled a date to see the place himself (de Troyes Vv 1-746). It is evident from the initial events of the tale that reputation is very important to medieval knights. Yvain’s decision to scurry secretly even to the point of
